FAQ

Q: Who leads the workshops?

A: We have two experienced instructors:

Dr. Heather MacKenzie is a Canadian speech-language pathologist and educator who has spent over 40-years developing and implementing approaches for enhancing learning in children with special needs. A major focus of her work has been on understanding people with autism. Heather is the creator of spark* and spark*EL, its upward extension.

Chris Barson is a British trainer/educator who has many years of experience and vast knowledge of learning differences, particularly autism. He is an innovative, energetic, and thoroughly enjoyable presenter. Chris is one of the best trainers Heather has had the pleasure to meet and work with.

Q: How will I know that spark* is the program I need?

A: If you work with students who become overwhelmed by too many options or large tasks, have difficulty managing worry or disappointment, give up easily, are unaware of how their behavior affects or impacts other people, and/or are upset by new situations, people or activities, spark* can help.

Q: I don’t know a lot about autism. What should I do?

A: We are all still learning about autism! Responding to the highly individual pattern of needs and abilities in autism is something we all need to improve on. Sign up for an online course at The Autism Workroom. It will boost your autism knowledge and ensure you get the most out of the spark* program.

Q: My students don’t all have autism. Can spark* work for all of them?

A: Yes! The concepts and strategies used in spark* will help all students, from two to eight years of age.

Q:  Can I do the certification workshop on my own?

A: The workshop is most effective when you can interact and try things out with friends or colleagues. The interactions and feedback will help you become more effective. We can make special arrangements for those who don’t have a learning partner.

Q: How much does it cost to complete the spark* certification process?

A: The three phases plus materials and one-year of support will cost $600 USD per person.

Q: What are the technical requirements to participate in the online training?

A: You'll need to have a computer/laptop/desktop/tablet, a reliable internet connection, audio (microphone plus speakers) and a webcam. We will be using Zoom so check out the full list there.

Q: How do I sign up?

A:  Sign up here to let us know you want to become a Certified spark* practitioner.
